Just Because
I don't want to hear a love song
I got on this airplane just to fly
And I know there's life below
But all that it can show me
Is the prairie and the sky
And I don't want to hear a sad story
Full of heartbreak and desire
The last time I felt like this
It was in the wilderness and the canyon was on fire
And I stood on the mountain in the night and I watched it burn
I watched it burn, I watched it burn.
I would rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
I would hold my life in his saving grace.
I would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham
If I thought I could see, I could see your face.
Well you really got me this time
And the hardest part is knowing I'll survive.
I have come to listen for the sound
Of the trucks as they move down
Out on ninety five
And pretend that it's the ocean
coming down to wash me clean, to wash me clean
Baby do you know what I mean
I would rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
I would hold my life in his saving grace.
I would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham
If I thought I could see, I could see your face.

Anniversary
This is a date in my life and the Emmylou Harris song that goes with it:
Boulder To Birmingham
Because I went to Westwood premiers, knew the lyrics to Cole Porter Songs, typed your words or added my own, watched Jim Dale sing "your song", split a sandwich and an egg cream, bought you the poppies, burgandy velvet, and initialed gold around your neck, and have never for a second stopped loving you, here is "Our Song" even if you hated that it was by Neil Diamond

Remembering
How Will I Remember You
You ask if I will remember you.
I answer Rockefeller Double Feature, Westwood 2:00 AM
grape jam fired through straws - splashes of
purple silliness and dinner rolls in a juggling act.
You ask when will you enter my mind.
I answer Down in the Depths of the 90th floor
on black and white with P. T. Barnum Up In One
and the Musicians Union on Wednesdays
You ask when I will echo your words
I answer, "My lover, my associate, but most
of all my friend" with "Zuckys #6 heavy on the
egg salad, skip the onions plus an egg cream"
You ask if there is an empty space in my life.
I answer Mars on fire in a nightime sky, mist
rising off the pool, typing dressed in only a
towel words to wrap tomorrow's fish.
You ask when I will say your name.
I answer California Dreamin', the Chinese
Air Force in the middle of the night -
Cryptic instances that delineate a life
And stories I will tell until
MY dying day
