Danny Wayland Seals (February 8, 1948 – March 25, 2009)

Pop singer turned country star Dan Seals has died in Nashville of complications of cancer. He was 61. The brother of Jim Seals of Seals & Croft, Dan Seals sang under his own name in recent years and as England Dan in the 1970s in a duo with John Ford Coley.

Dan was among the most gentle of men. And a gentleman. He was also vitally interested in the human condition. I'm linking to a copy of a project he organized after discovering some overgrown graves on property he'd recently bought. It turned out they were slaves from a nearby plantation. Dan and his wife organized, worked, and got people to volunteer their time to restore it. The very first time I met him he signed me up to help. I took my kids and some of their friends with me, and he worked our butts off.

The most wonderful thing was, some of my son's pals from his high school football team came along to help(after much nagging from me). These boys were all black, but even so, they felt little connection with the project initially. It just seemed like hard work on the weekends.

But as time went by, they got to know Dan, and learned the history of the site. They met some of the descendents of the dead. And they all ended up feeling that it had been a transformative time. I credit Dan Seals' quiet love and respect for all people for their experience. RIP Dan. I know you have rejoined the cosmos.

Absolutely beautiful Patsi. I really appreciate your taking the time to share your personal knowledge of the man, his work, and his feelings for others.

It was neat to see that Dan touched others. I am going to post a link to your site on a music board if you don't mind.

Patsi, I don't mind at all. I've put a link to your Books and Music site on my list of Trailmixer blogs. Should I put up the other two as well?

Oh, this news really makes me sad as I have always loved Dan Seals fromt time he was England Dan and even more so when he became a country artist on his own. As a matter of fact, I have two of his CDs in my collection.

Two of my very favorites are "Everything That Glitters (Is Not Gold)" and his duet with Marie Osmond on "Meet Me in Montana" - I just love that song and it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Actually, most of his songs gave me goosebumps.

Such talent and what a great human spirit as evidenced by Patsi's comments. The angels have one of the best in their choir now.

On mellow nights, both ED&JFC and Seals & Crofts are on the playlist.
