Shooting Minutemen

The Minute Man

My blog buddy Linda over at Are We There Yet is trundling around Lexington/Concord today with camera in hand to search out historical persons, places, and things.  In her honor:

The Shot Heard Round The World
Ralph Waldo Emerson
By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April’s breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood,
And fired the shot heard round the world.
The foe long since in silence slept;
Alike the conqueror silent sleeps;
And Time the ruined bridge has swept
Down the dark stream which seaward creeps.
On this green bank, by this soft stream,
We set to-day a votive stone;
That memory may their deed redeem,
When, like our sires, our sons are gone.
Spirit, that made those heroes dare,
To die, and leave their children free,
Bid Time and Nature gently spare
The shaft we raise to them and thee.

It's been too long since I spent time with Mr Emerson. I should remedy that.

It's kind of ironic that while in Concord I took pictures of the Alcott House and pictures of the Hawthorne House and neglected to take a picture of the Emerson House which was practically across the street. I did, however, get pictures of all the authors graves and now I just need to get them all straightened out and edited!
