Fifty Years of Change

As usual after a trip to the supermarket, I came home totally disgusted with the check out line reading material which amounts to pornography for the dimwitted. So I thought I would check and see what was the most popular magazine at the checkout stand 50 years ago.

Now there was probably a somewhat lurid "Confidential" hidden out of reach of the children, but the one magazine that was in virtually every home was Life. So what was on the covers of the nine issues of Life and the articles mentioned there for September and October of 1956?

A movie star (Liz Taylor - Giant), a broadway star (Siobhan McKenna in Saint Joan) and one TV actress (Janet Blair - Caesar's Hour)
A photo spread on the Epic of Man - Egypt
Another photo spread of an art exhibit of nude portraiture (yes there was a nude painting on the cover).
There was a three part Series on integration
Two historical articles by Winston Churchill
Candidate's View of the Campaign - The Ordeal & the Aura
War in the Middle East

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.
The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Should you care to do your own search of important years, simply click Life Magazine cover search . I sent my daughter an email with the cover that was published the week she was born since that was in September.

Pretty good! Sometimes when kids get into trouble and the old folks wail on about how much worse today's kids are...I think back to when I was a kid ...kids are kids, and we were no angels!

But don't you care about Jessica & Nick's divorce papers or how Branjolina is/are faring? Nah, me neither. But I know about it 'cause it stares me in the face at checkout. Now that's prime marketing real estate.

yeah...but all that Brat-jo-lina- stuff...and WHY Whitney left Bobby crap drives me to other vices....searching high and low for the Rasinets....and almond joys....so putting the "fine"ahem Literature there is causing me other woes....

( my son said as bad as the news has been recently they should put the booze or the beer coolers next to the "news"- he has a point...and when ever I bitchNmoan about the checkout rags he says" Could be worse- could be Yet More Tom Cruise & Stunt Baby Stories...") (He is 15- he can be all wise- for now ;-)

I not only recently bought a new copy of "1984"...I also bought "Animal Farm"...

If I remember correctly...the 2 books go "hand in hand"....

I've also purchased a copy of Sinclair Lewis' "It Can't Happen Here".....it was highly recommended along with "1984" on another blog....
